a few days ago i realised every person in this story started off as the opposite gender except for the mc and the alcoholic gravedigger guy. they are like clownfish, a whole cast of clownfish. i guess because the mc is one of the oldest characters i have still in existence it just never occurred to me that the story would just be cooler if he was female instead. it actually is cooler. this kind of protagonist is pretty much always a dude no exceptions and since it is my story and it is comprised of things i want to see, i have decided i want to see this. and motives make more sense too so. pretty much the only downside is that now i need to steal an adequate female name from somewhere and there is sadly a very small pool of scientists of appropriate disciplines to draw from. I NAMED EVERYBODY AFTER BIOLOGISTS + DEAD PEOPLE WHOSE NAMES I SAW WHILE WORKING AT A CEMETERY OFFICE

if i’m going to be perfectly honest i was not sure if i wanted to do this because i liked his face and i thought maybe the female version would be less cute. i drew her anyway and it turned out i was super wrong forever tho

I’m still alive and here, I just haven’t drawn anything worth posting in like, a long time. I think this tends to happen around times when I get weeks off. I just don’t do anything. The more free time I have the less I do.

These guys are mixed blood corsairs and they are here only because this is the most recent thing I have done and I want to have at least ONE picture post in February even if it just busts of ocs. Also because otherwise this would have been another short shitty text post.

a wee bab death spirit and its parent

just stained from working with a lot of inks and dyes (and medicinal plants, if any of those might stain skin, since he’s formally an apothecary and handles those a lot too). nobody ever uses gloves for anything. the bandages are from a completely unrelated, uh, scratching problem, and they cover up a lot of little scars and wounds. i don’t think he really cares about people seeing the bandages and it’s kind of unavoidable anyway if the only shirt style available is loose-sleeved and you tend to talk with your hands, but what’s underneath them is kinda shameful so they are worn pretty much all the time.

tl;dr they’re not literally death hands. but they are meant to look that way, partially to suggest some sort of connection to death/decay by way of character design, and partially because i just love gross hands. another reason why i made them grey is because most of his family is (subtly?) crow-themed and crows have grey/black feet.

i post original characters like once a month and i almost missed it this june, i’m terrible. we’ve also seen a sore lack of RED AND BLUE RED AND BLUE RED AND BLUE colour schemes lately and god i just love red and blue i needed my fix ok

natural landscapes are so easy for me but architecture is so difficult for two reasons i think

one is that in architecture you need to draw straight lines and can’t just scribble all over the canvas

two is that architecture is not typically climbable and if it doesn’t have the potential to be climbed on it’s not memorable to me

i think i personally like the sharkhead better because it’s basically just a really fat shark but i think i will go with the other one in the end because sharkhead unfortunately doesn’t have enough manatee. it turns out it is hard to get enough manatee when they look like floating rocks with faces.

now for something completely different

i have to combine these animals (+ a ray) for A Thing, so i sketched them to get a hang of their forms before i mushed them together

and i thought they somehow turned out ok so i coloured them and now i’m showing them to tumblr
