i tried to do this with a harmless picture of nepeta, but instead of a neat snowflakey thing i got the eye of an eldritch nightmare god
have i discovered the real big bad of homestuck??
I don’t understand…how the hell do you even do this?
Nepeta will demonstrate again, hopefully the result will be less monstrous than the previous one. Draw something, anything, even a scribble, on a transparent layer, just make sure there are lots of white space. You don’t have to use a face, it is just funnier this way. THIS IS ALSO HOW YOU MAKE SPIROGRAPHS BY THE WAY, IN CASE YOU EVER WANTED TO MAKE ONE OF THOSE. Just use a Venn diagram-looking thing instead of Nepeta.

Duplicate the drawing and flip the duplicate vertically with the transform tool (the transform tool is your best friend USE CTRL+T)

and then merge it and duplicate THAT horizontally and oh boy we are back to acid trip monsters, but at least this one looks kind of harmless, if slightly disappointed.

Another merge + duplicate and then rotate the duplicate layer 90 degrees in either direction (it doesn’t matter) and here is where you start getting the neat stuff.

The final step is to merge + duplicate TWICE. Rotate one copy 30 degrees and another 60 degrees to get your final snowflake magic circle thing (or duplicate, rotate 30, then duplicate the rotated layer and rotate it another 30 degrees, either works). The edges of this Nepeta were neat but the inside was boring (mostly black) so I took the original face, made it smaller and flatter and white then did the same thing for the inside and now it is COOL

why
I… must try this…
Thank you very much, now I can use this for my evil art purposes.
for myself in the future
